Dawei gas power plant to be completed by 2016

A natural gas-powered electric plant to be built by the Dawei Power and Utility Co, Ltd (DPU) will be completed in January 2016, according to officials.

The power plant will be built in Yayphyu Township, Taninthayi Region and will generate 500 MW according to Win Swe, the regional minister for electric power.

The Italian-Thai Development Company has yet to cease their operation at the Dawei Special Economic Zone and will quit after the treaty between Myanmar and Thailand goes into  effect, said Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Aye Myint, who is also a Chairman of the Central Working Committee for Implementation of Dawei SEZ.

Japan ‘sure to play major role in Dawei’

Myanmar officials say they remain confident Japan will play a major role in developing the Dawei Special Economic Zone, as officials from the country have joined talks about the ambitious project following the decision of Italian-Thai Development to step aside as developer in June due to lack of funds.

Japan is set to host the next meeting with Myanmar and Thailand in the coming months, U Aye Myint, union minister of railway and transportation and the chairman of Dawei SEZ construction committee, told The Myanmar Times after a press conference on the project last week.

Clean coal technology to be used in Dawei power plant

Clean coal technology will be used at a new power plant in Dawei Special Economic Zone in southern Myanmar, according to the Dawei project management committee.

“We aim to build a power plant that uses clean coal technology to provide electricity from the Dawei project,” Thaung Lwin, the committee’s chairman, told a press conference on July 27. The power plant is to be installed at a capacity of 600 mega watt and to be completed by 2017.
